“It Was the Campaign That Caused Me Pain” — Nollywood Actress Aminatu Papapa Regrets Supporting Tinubu, Apologises to Nigerians ; Lagos, Nigeria

Prominent Nollywood actress Bukky Adekogbe Raji, popularly known by her stage name Aminatu Papapa, has publicly expressed deep regret for campaigning for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 general elections, describing her decision as one that now brings her emotional pain and disappointment.

In a tearful and emotionally charged video that has gone viral across social media platforms, Raji tendered an unreserved apology to Nigerians, admitting that the current economic hardship and growing hunger in the country have made her reflect on her role in the election campaign.

“It was the campaign I did for Tinubu that is causing me pain,” the actress said, visibly shaken. “I am in pain because many people are hungry. Many cannot afford to eat three square meals a day. I beg Nigerians, in the name of God, please forgive me.”

Raji, who has enjoyed a decades-long career in Yoruba-language cinema, said she supported Tinubu out of genuine belief in his leadership capacity and the hope that his administration would bring positive change to the nation. She clarified that her endorsement was not influenced by money or material gain.

“I didn’t collect a kobo. I campaigned because I thought things would get better. I never meant to mislead anyone. I did it from my heart,” she said.

The actress lamented the widespread hardship across Nigeria, particularly the soaring cost of food and basic necessities, which she said have left millions of Nigerians struggling to survive. According to her, it breaks her heart to see people begging for food and losing hope in the future.

“People are suffering. The hardship is real. I see mothers who cannot feed their children. It’s heartbreaking. I feel responsible in some way, and that’s why I must speak out and ask for forgiveness.”

Raji’s emotional appeal has sparked mixed reactions online. While some Nigerians commended her for owning up to her actions and showing remorse, others criticized what they called “opportunistic apologies” from celebrities who supported political candidates without critically examining their policies.

A Growing Trend of Regret Among Celebrities

Raji’s apology comes just days after another Nollywood actor, Ganiu Nafiu, popularly known as Alapini, also publicly expressed regret for supporting President Tinubu. Alapini lamented the lack of recognition and the harsh treatment received by entertainers who campaigned for the president, saying many feel betrayed and used.

Their sentiments reflect a growing wave of disillusionment among public figures and grassroots supporters, as the Nigerian economy continues to reel under the impact of subsidy removal, inflation, naira devaluation, and food insecurity.

A Wake-Up Call?

Raji’s public apology adds to the ongoing national conversation about the role of influencers, entertainers, and celebrities in shaping public opinion during elections. Critics argue that many entertainers fail to do due diligence before endorsing candidates, while supporters say they, like every other citizen, are entitled to express political choices.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic challenges, her apology may serve as both a personal catharsis and a reflection of the collective frustration of a nation still waiting for the “renewed hope” it was promised.
