Governor Makinde Reaffirms Commitment to Resilient Economy, Improved Living Standards, and Future Security for Oyo State,Ibadan, Oyo State — June 20, 2025
Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has once again reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to building a resilient and inclusive economy, improving the standard of living for residents, and laying a strong foundation for future generations.
Governor Makinde made the declaration during a keynote address delivered at a policy dialogue held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, on Thursday. The event, which drew stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, and the private sector, was aimed at reviewing the administration’s mid-term development priorities and charting the way forward for the state’s economic and social policies.
“Our vision has remained clear and consistent: to build a resilient economy that empowers our people, improves their quality of life, and secures our collective future,” Makinde stated. “This is not just political rhetoric. It is the driving force behind every policy, every project, and every reform we have implemented.”
Progress So Far: Infrastructure, Education, Healthcare
Governor Makinde highlighted key achievements under his administration, citing the completion of major infrastructural projects such as the Moniya-Iseyin road, the rehabilitation of rural access roads under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), and the ongoing dualization of strategic urban corridors in Ibadan and other major towns.
In education, the governor reaffirmed his government’s policy of free and compulsory basic education, noting that Oyo had recorded improved enrolment and retention rates in public primary and secondary schools.
“Education is the bedrock of development. If we are to secure the future, we must invest in the minds of our children today,” he said, while also announcing plans to recruit more qualified teachers and expand vocational training centers across the state.
On healthcare, Makinde pointed to the revamp of Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) in all 351 wards in the state and the introduction of mobile clinics to serve underserved communities. He also praised the state’s progress in reducing maternal and infant mortality through targeted health interventions.
Economic Reforms and Investment Drive
A significant part of the governor’s remarks focused on economic sustainability and investment attraction. He spoke about the implementation of the Oyo State Roadmap for Sustainable Development 2023–2027, which seeks to consolidate gains from his first term and scale up industrialization, agribusiness, and technology.
“We have prioritized the enabling environment for business. From digitizing land registration to simplifying tax processes, we are creating a climate that attracts investors and nurtures local entrepreneurs,” he added.
The governor also highlighted the successful establishment of the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub, which has attracted private-sector partners in value chain development for cassava, maize, and livestock.
Makinde further stressed the role of youth and innovation, announcing a new partnership with a global tech incubator to train over 10,000 young people in digital skills, software engineering, and entrepreneurship.
Security and Governance
Governor Makinde did not shy away from the issue of security, which has remained a national concern. He reiterated the importance of the Oyo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, in complementing federal security efforts. The agency, he said, has proven instrumental in tackling rural banditry and safeguarding lives and property.
“Security is foundational. You cannot build a future without safety. That is why we will continue to invest in intelligence gathering, equipment, and community policing initiatives.”
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, citing Oyo State’s improved ranking on the Fiscal Transparency Index published by BudgIT and the World Bank’s States Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability (SFTAS) program.
Looking Ahead
Governor Makinde concluded his speech with a strong message of hope and collective responsibility, urging citizens to remain engaged and supportive of ongoing reforms.
“The task of building a better Oyo State is not mine alone. It is a shared responsibility. Let us continue to walk this path together — not just for ourselves, but for the generations that will come after us.”
His remarks were met with resounding applause from attendees, many of whom lauded his pragmatic approach to governance and inclusive leadership style.
Political analysts say Makinde’s steady messaging and focus on long-term development continue to set him apart in Nigeria’s increasingly competitive political landscape. With two years remaining in his second term, attention now turns to how his administration will consolidate its achievements and navigate future challenges.
